A group of inspiring young people from Chichester have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the local community by housing association A2Dominion.
Students from Chichester College were awarded first place in the Young Unsung Hero Award at A2Dominion’s Making a Difference Awards, honouring their dedication, creativity, and resilience in supporting the Swanfield Park community gardens.
Since 2017, students aged 16–25 from the college’s special educational needs department have been designing and building wooden planters for both the Jubilee and community vegetable gardens. Using recycled wood from the college’s joinery department, the students construct large planter kits that are assembled on site, gaining valuable hands-on experience and making a lasting impact.
Strengthening community ties
When the original Jubilee planters were vandalised, students returned to redesign and rebuild them, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and pride in their work. Many of the students had previously supported the project while attending St Anthony’s School, and their continued involvement has helped strengthen community ties.
The group was nominated by Janet Read, Communities Partner at A2Dominion, who praised their “quiet determination, resilience, and compassion”, adding: “They’re tackling challenges, improving lives, and showing us all the power of youth to lead change.”
Roger, a lecturer in special educational needs at Chichester College, said: “This award is a massive boost for our students and our department. The opportunity to gain real work experience in the community is the most important part of their curriculum.
“Many of our students find it difficult to communicate or interact socially, but this project gives them purpose, confidence, and pride. They see their work making a difference—and that’s incredibly valuable.
“To receive this recognition from A2Dominion is absolutely wonderful. It shows our students that their efforts are appreciated and that they’re doing something meaningful.”
The award, along with £100 in shopping vouchers, was presented by Dawn Wightman, A2Dominion’s Director of Customer and Communities.
Dawn Wightman said: “The nominations we received this year were a powerful reminder of the incredible things that happen when people step up to support their neighbours, whether through volunteering, organising local activities, or simply being there for someone in need. Thank you to those who nominated and congratulations to our amazing winners and runners up.”
The Making a Difference Awards celebrate individuals and groups who go above and beyond to improve lives and strengthen communities. This year’s winners were selected from nominations across London and the South. The awards are part of A2Dominion’s Community Investment programme which supports local communities through a wide range of initiatives.
