Brighton & Hove’s beloved independent venue, The Old Market (TOM), is marking a major milestone – the building turns 200, and the newly-formed charity turns one.

This landmark moment underscores TOM’s mission to champion brave new voices, nurture emerging talent, and remain a vital part of the city’s cultural fabric. As part of the celebrations, TOM is reflecting on its history, showcasing exciting performances, and launching a crucial fundraising campaign to ensure its future.

Originally built as part of the New Brunswick Town development by Charles Busby, The Old Market began its life as a bustling trading hub. Over the years, the building transformed, serving various purposes – including time spent as a riding school and a warehouse.

In 2010, the building was purchased by locals Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell. The duo are best known as the creators and directors of the global hit show, STOMP. The Old Market was the first place Steve and Luke worked together, and they wanted to give back to the city and community. They invested in various upgrades, including new seats, lights and a refreshed decor, and reopened the venue as TOM in 2011.

Charitable status a turning point

2024 was a turning point for The Old Market. After years of operating as an independent venue, TOM officially became a registered charity, a move that allowed it to expand its support for artists and the local community. This transition ensures that TOM can continue providing an accessible platform for creative expression, helping to develop bold new work and making the arts more inclusive for all.

Becoming a charity also highlights TOM’s dedication to grassroots talent and pioneering performances. Unlike many other venues, TOM receives no regular public funding, making self-generated income and donations from supporters essential to its survival. With this shift, TOM is more committed than ever to keeping its doors open for future generations of artists and audiences alike.

A variety of memorable moments

TOM is a cornerstone of Brighton & Hove’s creative scene, hosting a dynamic mix of live music, theatre, comedy, and genre-blending events. Having hosted an eclectic array of performances over the years, audiences have witnessed many memorable moments: from early performances by the likes of Sam Smith and Hollie McNish, to a recent residency by Brighton icon Fatboy Slim, where the venue debuted its latest event format In The Box (a 360º live event and visual experience), and even shows like the VR and immersive experience Doom Room, which according to members of the venue team, “literally left audience members lost for words!”

Fundraising campaign launched

To mark its first year as a charity and ensure its continued impact, TOM has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign. The goal? To raise £100,000 by December 2025. These funds will help improve facilities, support local artists and keep ticket prices accessible, ensuring that TOM remains a welcoming space for all.

Every ticket purchased, event attended, drink bought, and donation made directly contributes to TOM’s future. Supporters can contribute in a variety of ways, including naming a seat in the auditorium, joining the venue’s TOM500 membership scheme, or even securing naming rights for key spaces within the building.

As TOM celebrates another birthday and its first year as a registered charity, the venue remains focused on its mission: fostering bold artistic expression, supporting emerging voices, and bringing world-class performances to Brighton & Hove. With community backing and continued investment, TOM is set to thrive for years to come.

For those who love live performance and believe in the power of the arts, now is the perfect time to support TOM’s journey. Whether through attending a show, donating, or simply spreading the word, every act of support ensures that TOM continues to be a home for creativity and culture for generations to come.
