Last Sunday a small miracle happened. After a week of grey and gloomy weather, the day dawned clear, the sun shone, and close to half a million people assembled in the centre of London to support the Together Alliance’s message of “Love not Hate”, uniting to combat the rise of the far right.
They came from all across the country – not only an impressive list of celebrities and organisations, but, more importantly, hundreds of thousands of ordinary people wanting to combat the racism, misogyny and aggression they have seen being stirred up in their own communities.
Unlike the undercurrent of violence that often accompanies demonstrations by the far right, the whole day was joyous and happy, with a minimal police presence. There was music, there was dancing, and in spite of a two hour wait for those towards the middle and rear of the march to finally move off, no grumbling and no ill humour. Most inspiringly, the majority of those marching were young.
